Sydney man charged over alleged attempt to poison woman by putting insecticide in cup of tea

61-year-old arrested on Tuesday and charged with causing poison to be taken with the intention to murder

A man faces charges after allegedly trying to kill a woman by putting insecticide in her cup of tea.

The 61-year-old man was arrested at a home on Lanark Place in St Andrews, in south-west Sydney, about 11.25am on Tuesday morning. Police allegedly seized a bottle of insecticide, which will be forensically examined.

Officers established Strike Force Southport in September to investigate reports of an alleged poisoning.

Police will allege in court that a 66-year-old woman became seriously ill after drinking tea prepared by a man known to her.

The man was taken to Campbelltown police station and charged with three domestic violence-related charges, including causing poison to be taken with the intention to murder, using poison to endanger life and using to poison to inflict grievous bodily harm.

He has been refused bail and was due appear before Campbelltown local court on Wednesday.
